ABSTRACT
The research work has focused on the mother tongue influence on English of L1 speakers of Igbo. The Igbo language and its linguistic status were looked at, the Igbo language and the people who speak the language as their mother tongue was also looked at. The method of data collection used in carrying out the study as oral interview, the data collected was from two male individuals who had their childhood in Igbo land and also speak English as L2, their age rang were 25-30 years. The location was in Lagos market and New Benin market. Questions on the effect of mother tongue on English language, how Igbo speakers pronounce English words with examples. Consultation of books, internet, and journals were used to carry out the research. The previous studies relating to the work was looked at. The concern of the present study was stated which was the mother tongue influence on English of L1 speakers of Igbo. The theoretical frame work used to carry out the study was contrastive analysis theory which was introduced by Lado, (in his book ‘’Linguistics Across Cultures’’.
