MORPHOLOGICAL PROCESSES OF OKE A DIALECT OF EDO

ABSTRACT

 This work focuses on the morphological processes of Oke dialect in Edo spoken in the northern part of Edo State). The work concerns itself mainly with how new words or terms are coined or formed in the Oke making use of medical terms from the English language. Oke as a dialect has never witnessed any linguistic scholarly work before; this work tends to look at morphological processes that exist in the language, as this form the basic constituents of a word. I have chosen the descriptive linguistics theory paying attention to the structuralist approach theory by Ferdinand de Saussure to explain the processes used in this study. The main aim of this study is to explain the morphological processes that occur during the coining of a new term in Oke paying attention to compounding, prefixation, coinage and borrowing. Derivations of new terms in Oke were used to explain more on the concept of word formation processes in Oke. This study will help to show that no word or term is exclusive to any language. All ideas can be represented in all languages of the world. This goes a long way to prove that no language is superior to another and no language is inferior to another. ALL LANGUAGES ARE EQUAL.
