CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the analysis of the morphological variability in two cocoyam genera have been conducted. The results suggest that the morphological characters employed in the study can distinguish the two cocoyam genera. This suggest that the characters might be of agronomic and breeding relevance. It was observed in the study that taro has more superior characters as revealed by the quantitative characters. Therefore, the diversity of all the accessions was no doubt indicative of an important genetic pot ential for a better agronomic exploitation of Nigerian cocoyam germplasm. Moreover, the below and above ground qualitative character also clearly distinguish the two cocoyam genera. It is hence imperative to establish a cocoyam database in Niger to develop a strategy for the documentation, breeding and conservation of the existing cocoyam germplasm. Further work is necessary to develop processing technologies that will maximize the potentials of tannia and taro germplasm in Nigeria in order to encourage production, consumption, and conservation.
