ABSTRACT
This work is a study of the embedded Igbo verbs of cooking that have the super- ordinate term ‘cook’ in their morpho-syntactic manifestations. These verbs are parboiling, smoking, warming, roasting, frying, boiling and pounding. These verbs have compatible inherent semantic features that can co-occur with them. The theoretical framework adopted for this classification is the Transformational Generative Grammar, precisely the 1965 model that introduced semantic component with the notions of sub categorization rule to serve as a check and balance to the syntactic structures, I discovered that the embedded verbs of co-occur with a selected compatible NPs and their tenses are showed with an affix or with the aid of auxiliary verb showing future and consistence. This study will be of utmost importance to the native speakers, chance speakers and learners of the language when faced with distinguishing compatible object NPs. This can be achieved with relevant documentation and proper storage to aid communication using the cooking verbs.
