ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to examine the modernity and indigenous belief system in Ugbegun: a case study of Odohun. The study was carried set give the history of Ugbegun in a bid to examining the major belief system of the people of Ugbegun and the nature of colonialism in Ugbegun land. The study also looked at the effect of modernity on the belief system of the people and suggestions were made on the way forward in safeguarding cultural heritage despite modern influences. The researcher encountered several changes such as inadequate archival documents on the Ugbegun people and their origin, which made it quite difficult for the researcher to conduct the study. Although the time frame given was sufficient enough, however, the study it was quite difficult to get persons to be interviewed on the topic concerning the Ugbegun people. The researcher had to carryout interviews at night due to the busy schedules of those interviewed. The study contributes to society by providing valuable insights into the dynamics of cultural change and preservation in contemporary Nigerian communities. By examining how traditional beliefs and practices adapt to or resist modern influences, the study offers a nuanced understanding of the complex interplay between tradition and modernity, informing efforts to promote cultural heritage preservation, social cohesion, and sustainable development. 73 The impact of modernity on the indigenous belief system of the Ugbegun people, as exemplified through the Odohun festival, reflects a complex interplay between tradition and change. While modernity has undoubtedly introduced shifts in societal structures, values, and practices, the Odohun festival stands as a resilient symbol of cultural continuity and adaptation of the Ugbegun people. Through the lens of the Odohun festival, it becomes evident that modernity has both challenged and revitalized indigenous belief systems. On one hand, factors such as urbanization, globalization, and technological advancement have led to the erosion of certain traditional practices and beliefs among the Ugbegun people. The festival may have undergone modifications or lost some of its original significance in the face of changing lifestyles and priorities. However, on the other hand, modernity has also provided avenues for the preservation and reinterpretation of indigenous traditions. The Odohun festival may have evolved to accommodate contemporary sensibilities while retaining its core cultural essence. It could serve as a platform for intergenerational dialogue, where younger generations engage with their heritage in new ways, blending traditional rituals with modern expressions. Finally, the impact of modernity on the indigenous belief system of the Ugbegun people, as observed through the Odohun festival, underscores the resilience and adaptability of cultural practices in the face of external influences. While challenges persist, the festival exemplifies a dynamic process of 74 negotiation and reinvention, wherein tradition and modernity intersect to shape the collective identity of the community. The indigenous customs and traditions of the Ugbegun people are deeply rooted in their history, spirituality, and social fabric, serving as a guiding force that shapes their collective identity and way of life. These customs and traditions are not merely relics of the past but living expressions of their cultural heritage, passed down through generations and adapted to contemporary circumstances. From birth rituals to marriage ceremonies, from communal festivals to ancestral worship, every aspect of Ugbegun's customs and traditions reflects a profound connection to the land, ancestors, and community. These traditions foster a sense of belonging and solidarity among the Ugbegun people, reinforcing social cohesion and providing a framework for ethical behavior and interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, the preservation of indigenous customs and traditions plays a crucial role in safeguarding Ugbegun's cultural sovereignty and resilience in the face of external influences. As modernity and globalization continue to reshape the world, maintaining a strong connection to their indigenous practices helps the Ugbegun people navigate change while preserving their distinct cultural identity. By upholding their customs and traditions, the Ugbegun people not only honor their ancestors and heritage but also assert their right to self-determination and cultural autonomy. In essence, the indigenous customs and traditions of the Ugbegun people are not only a 75 source of cultural pride but also a vital foundation for their continued existence and flourishing in an ever-changing world. The impact of modernity on socio-cultural change in Ugbegun is multifaceted, bringing both opportunities and challenges to the community's way of life. With the advent of modern technology, communication, and urbanization, Ugbegun has witnessed a transformation in its traditional practices, beliefs, and social structures. While these changes have led to improved access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, they have also posed threats to the preservation of indigenous customs and cultural heritage. Western influence, coupled with globalization, has introduced new values, norms, and lifestyles that sometimes conflict with traditional Ugbegun practices, leading to a gradual erosion of cultural identity and social cohesion. However, amidst these challenges, there is also resilience and adaptation as the community navigates the complexities of modernity while striving to maintain a balance between embracing change and preserving their rich cultural heritage. Efforts to promote cultural awareness, heritage conservation, and community empowerment are essential in ensuring that Ugbegun retains its unique identity and resilience in the face of socio-cultural change brought about by modernity.
