ABSTRACT
This study evaluated the direction of groundwater flow in Iyuku, Auchi, Edo State. The static water level was evaluated using a Dip meter. The GPS (global positioning system) was used to derive the elevation points and the co-ordinates. The Hydraulic head was derived by subtracting the static water level from the ground surface elevation. The static water level for each sampling points were derived by subtracting the actual elevation from the corrected water level. Ten (10) hydraulic heads were evaluated, seven (7) from the sampling points and three (3) from the Benin Owen River Development Authority (BORDA) was combined to produce a contour map indicating the direction of groundwater flow. At sampling point 9, the static water level 263.272m with an elevation of 267.032m. sampling point 10 shows static water level of 3.19m at an elevation of 300.509m with corrected water level of 297.319m. at point 11 the static water is 3.11m at an elevation of 300.992m with corrected water level of 297.882m. at sampling point 12, the static water level is 3.16m at an elevation of 269.268m with corrected water level of 266.108m. The BORDA sampling point 1 shows 3.23m at an elevation of 291.334m and corrected water level of 288.104m. At sampling point 1, the static water level is 10.08m at an elevation of 132m with corrected water level of 121.92m. At sampling point 6, the static water level shows 1.68m, at an elevation of 140m with corrected water level of 138.32. Sampling point 7, shows static water level is 15m at 285m with corrected water level of 270m. BORDA sampling point 2 shows 4.3m at an elevation of 146m with corrected water level of 141.7m. BORDA sampling point 3 shows that the static water level is 4.1m at an elevation of 142m with corrected water level of 137.9m. ArcGis 10.0 (software was used for this work. The overall result from the parameter for determination of groundwater flow direction and map of the aquifer system within the Iyuku, Auchi Edo State study area shows that groundwater flow is dominantly from North-Eastern corner to the South-West. The result shows that land use activities such as indiscriminate solid waste disposal, underground leakage of sewage in the study area will be more detrimental for communities or people lying within the South-Western part of Iyuku, Auchi Edo State.
