ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate the microorganisms associated with soursop seed obtained from Uselu Market, in Benin City. The experiment was carried out in the Department of Crop Science Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Edo State to isolate, identify and evaluate the microorganisms associated with the seed parts of soursop.

The seeds were plated in PDA and NA respectively, pure cultures were sub-cultured from the samples plated, and pure cultures were identified and the results gotten from the identification showed the microorganisms present in the seed parts.

The experiment showed that three fungi, Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp., and Yeast cells and four bacteria Bacillus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Proteus spp., were found to be pathogenic to the soursop seeds.

These seeds were treated with Trichoderma spp., which is a primary approach, as an integral component of agricultural practice in seed to plant to soil system that can replace chemical seed treatment in order to establish seed bio-priming through making beneficial microorganisms.

Trichoderma spp. promotes the growth of plants and limits the growth of pathogens enzymatically degrading other fungi, hence the reduction in the occurrence of the development of other microorganisms.
