ABSTRACT
The research was carried out to evaluate the microbiological of treated and untreated rubber effluent. Standard bacteriological methods were used to determine the total bacterial and fungal count of the effluents using pour plate methods after serial dilution. The bacterial isolates were characterized and identified using morphological and biochemical methods. The percentage distribution and frequency of the isolates were evaluated using statistical method. The results revealed that the enumeration of microbial population (bacteria and fungi) in the treated and raw effluents revealed that bacterial and fungal counts (log10 cfu/ml) in the raw effluents were 5.04±1.37 and 4.51±1.53 respectively while the counts for the treated effluents were 3.18±0.55 and 3.05±0.36. The counts for the raw effluents were found to be higher than the counts for the treated effluents. There was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the bacterial count for the raw and treated effluent samples while there was no difference in the fungal count between the raw and treated effluent samples. The cultural morphological and biochemical characteristics of bacteria from rubber effluents revealed that Bacillus subtilis, Serratia marcescens, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella enterica and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The distribution of bacterial isolates revealed that Bacillus and Serratia were found in both treated and untreated effluents. The aforementioned bacterial isolates had the highest frequency of occurrence (100 % apiece).
