MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF INDOOR AIR IN OFF CAMPUS PRIVATE HOSTELS

ABSTRACT

This is a study of indoor air microbial contamination in various rooms in the University of Benin Ugbowo campus hostels and off campus private hostel (Round house student hostel). Air samples were taken from various rooms within these premises. The bacteria identified were Mirococcus sp. Which was found almost in all rooms. Others were Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus lactus found in three rooms only. The fungi identified were Penicilliun sp. Being dorminant in all rooms, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Alternaria and Fusarium which was identified in only one room. All the fungi identified had a septate hyphae, most had a condiospore spore type except for Fusarium which spore type was chlamydospore. For antibiotic test, Mirococcus was sensitive to all except Ampliclox and Zinnacef. Staphylococcus aureus was resistant to all except perfloxacin, Ciproflaxin and Gentamycin. Streptococcus lactus was sensitive to all except Ampliclox, Zinnacef and Septrin.
