ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the Microbial Load of Scomber spp. in Ovia North East and Egor Local Government Areas in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Seventy-two (72) Scomber spp. were bought from several sellers and taken to the laboratory where the microbial loads were analysed using Potato Dextrose Agar and Nutrient Agar for fungi and bacterial respectively. A total of 15 isolates were obtained and identified as bacterial and fungi. The highest frequency of bacterial infection appeared in Bacillus spp. (11.01%), while the least occurrence of bacterial was seen in Staphylococcus spp. 5(4.459%). The highest fungi count was (3.63 x 103A) and least fungi count was (1.04 x 103A). After analyzing, it was observed that the sample was high in percentage crude protein and ash content with low moisture content which suggested that smoking enhance the nutritional value of the sample and the presence of some pathogen like Pseudomonas causing intestinal and nosocomial infections. The study also revealed that the Smoked Scomber spp. from the study area was highly contaminated with microorganisms but when processed and stored, the micro-organisms reduced and prolonged shelf life.
