ABSTRACT

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is important for the control of infection , prevention of diseases in the healthcare system. A study of decontaminated personal protective equipment in the immunization department of Edo Specialist Hospital shows the presence of two bacteria species (Bacillus subtilis and Corynrbacterium spp) and a fungus (Mucor sp) which were isolated from samples of contaminated PPE. This study emphasizes the importance of decontamination procedures used in hospitals to reduce the load of microbial contamination on PPE. Risks to PPE exist in varying forms. Defects in manufacturing and assembly can leave seams and zippers open to penetration. Both the person donning and the trained observer should inspect PPE as it is being put on. Suit materials can be torn or cut by sharp edges within the environment, and breaches in suit integrity can occur with use while staff bend, stoop, and reach. A thorough investigation revealed that the efficacy of PPE decontamination processes has a considerable impact on microbiological load level
