ABSTRACT

Water plays a key role in supporting all forms of life on earth. Water acts as a solvent to dissolve the solutes of human body and also acts a medium for undergoing many metabolic processes. Therefore it is vital for all known forms of life. Nevertheless, if it’s contaminated with a variety of contaminants as in Wastewater or sewage, it may become the place for the growth of different types of microorganisms which may have a potential for spreading a variety of diseases. The study was conducted to evaluate and test isolates from wastewater collected from emergency Unit, health center,Uniben. The specific objectives include identification of the isolated bacteria using various biochemical tests, to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of the identified bacteria, to assess the potential health risks associated with the presence of these bacteria in the waste water. Methodology utilized in this research study include: isolation of bacteria utilizing nutrient agar, a total of four (4) bacteria isolates with a sample size (sample A and sample B) were examined. The result showed the presence of seven bacteria isolates with Escherichia coli, Bacillus spp., Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas spp displaying the highest level of contamination. The result showed a percentage of occurrence of bacteria of E. coli (15%), Bacillus spp. (10 %), Staphylococcus aureus (25%) and Pseudomonas spp. (50%), In conclusion, To achieve the discharge standard and accelerate the treatment of polluted water, it is necessary to incorporate a multitude of wastewater treatment procedures, since microbiological pollution is the corollary in wastewater. The methods that have been taken into consideration in this analysis are the most suitable choices for treating wastewater on a big scale, as well as for treating wastewater on a small scale of industrial wastewater treatment in the future.
