ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the mechanisms influencing groundwater chemistry in Sabo, Auchi, Edo State. Eight (8) water samples collected and kept in clean plastic bottles were analyzed using titrimetric analytical method. The parameters analyzed includes SO4, HCO3, CO3, TDS, Ca, Na, K, Cl. Results shows that most of the physicochemical parameters were within the WHO 2011 permissible limits. Results of hydro-chemical facies as depicted by Piper’s plot indicated that Mg was the dominant cation and Cl as the dominant anion. According to Piper’s plot the groundwater is classified as CaCl water type. Findings from Gibbs diagram indicated that water-rock interaction is the major mechanism influencing groundwater in the area. However, the presence of few samples around the precipitation zone indicates that other sources including scavenging of contaminated aerosols from the atmosphere during precipitation, irrigation return flow and agricultural run-offs may also play important role in groundwater quality in the area.
