MEANS OF COMMUNICATION BEFORE AND AFTER COLONIZATION IN AFRICA

ABSTRACT

This project focuses on Means of Communication Before and After Colonization in Africa. The researcher employs full content analysis methodology, including a systematic literature reviews which includes books, journals, encyclopedia, articles and internet posts. This study highlights the various communication strategies, such as rhetoric, symbolography, town-criers, Roko, idiophones, and music, that were utilized in precolonial times. The arrival of colonialists only modernized the process and introduced new mediums of communication. It was found in the process of carrying out this study that Africans are blessed with rich culture, values and norms and good methods of communication but lack flexibility of documentation. Also, it was discovered that no plans were on ground to improve the system of communication in Africa before the Europeans trespassed to Africa. This lack of documentation made the proper handling of African means of communication prone to being eroded with time. It is discovered that postcolonial means of communication is very effective and embodies the ability to reach every nook and cranny of the whole world at a go. The researcher recommends that the old culture as related to means of communication should not be totally neglected. Also, Africans should warmly embrace post-colonial communication system so as to be on the same page with other developing and developed countries. Finally, the Africans should use the opportunity of modern means of effective communication to liberate the African nations from poverty and cold wars among African countries.
