MARITIME TERRORISM AND GLOBAL SECURITY SINCE 2001

ABSTRACT

The research is on maritime terrorism and global security since 2001. The objectives are to investigate maritime security in global perspectives and to analyze the nature of global maritime terrorism. The work noted that it has become imperative for nations to increase security around their borders arid with the advancing wave of terrorism, air and land borders are being guarded closely, however, an area which has been neglected so far and with already dire consequences is the area of maritime security. It is well known that waterways are one of the largest points of entry into any given country, and the student of history will find it easy to prove that as nations tightened their air and land security, gradually the major threats shifted to maritime means. It’s an open secret that terrorism has taken a vicious hold of the civilized world and countries are doing all in their power to beef up their land and air borders, however not very much attention has been paid to the maritime borders, through which most of a country’s business with the international community is done. The maritime border of a country becomes a prime target for terrorist’s attack and even piratical activities, thus bringing out the research focus on how to secure maritime borders in the age of terrorism, steps that have been taken so far will be examined, alongside recommendations on how countries can secure their maritime borders in this age where terrorists are getting bold and more daring. This work ill address some of these threats and shed more light on the activities of terrorists seeking to use the decaying position of maritime security to their advantage.
