ABSTRACT

The need for the production of a comprehensive map for the University of Benin arose due to the absence of one,for proper planning of construction project within the Campus. Hence, the need to carry out all forms of land survey required for the production of a comprehensive map.

The project site is a section of the University of Benin Ugbowo Campus (PHASE II) located between Egor and Ovia North-East LGA, Benin City Edo State, Nigeria. The project area is geographically located within longitude  and latitude  and longitudeand         latitude  .

The project started by obtaining the satellite imagery of the study area from Google Earth Pro. The image gotten helped to have a very clear view of the project area. This made office and field reconnaissance easy to carry out. Monumentation was done around the perimeter of the project area, then Trimble GNSS equipment was used to carry out the perimeter survey, detailing and to acquire the spot height data. All raw data were downloaded and exported into an excel sheet as a csv file.

AutoCAD 2013 was used to produce a two dimensional (2D) map of the project area. Surfer 13 was used to produce the wireframe map; ArcGIS was used for georeferencing and digitizing of the project area.  QGIS was used to produce the 3D map. ArcGIS 10.3 and Surfer 13 software was used to produce the digital terrain model (DTM) for further enhancing of the slope map, hill shade of the project area.

Having completed this project which is a third order survey, it is very vital to state that a comprehensive map is important for physical planning, and also accurate decision making when carrying out projects and as well as environmental management. This study also recommends that similar project be carried out and students should be encouraged to participate.
