ABSTRACT

The project investigates the utilization of Geospatial techniques in addressing and managing traffic congestion. GIS technology is increasingly being recognized as a valuable tool for managing traffic congestion. In this project, a comprehensive study was conducted in the congested areas of Benin Uselu Road with adjoining Adolor Junction located in the Egor local government area of Edo state. The methodology involved a reconnaissance survey, where the satellite imagery of the study areas were acquired. To accurately georeference the satellite imagery, a handheld Garmin map 78s GPS receiver was used to acquire the coordinates in UTM. The acquired satellite imagery, in raster format, was then digitized and converted into vector format. This allowed us to extract essential attribute data such as road names, road widths, road types, and road lengths. By combining the geospatial and attribute data within a GIS environment, the coordinates were generated for the traffic congested regions of the road network. These generated coordinates hold significant relevance in effectively managing traffic congestion. Through our reconnaissance survey, various levels of traffic congestion was identified along Uselu Road adjoining Adolor junction. From high congestion to low congestion, as well as areas with no congestion, we were able to capture and analyze the traffic conditions. The creation of a unified database within the GIS environment provides a streamlined and efficient approach to managing traffic congestion. This database can be utilized by traffic congestion agencies to analyze and implement effective strategies for alleviating congestion.  In conclusion, our project demonstrates the immense potential of GIS technology in traffic congestion management. By harnessing the power of spatial data and attribute analysis, a more efficient and less cumbersome approach to tackling traffic congestion was achieved.
