ABSTRACT

The total oil yield and the fatty acid composition were determined in the Telfariaoccidentalis fixed oil using organic solvent extraction and Gas chromatography flame ioniation detector (GC-FID). The crude oil sample containing fatty acid was converted into methyl esters and analysed by GC-FID. Five fatty acids were identified using GC-FID. The major saturated fatty acids were palmitic acid (7.50 ± 2.80%) and stearic acid (2.80 ± 0.21%). The monounsaturated fatty acid was oleic acid (14.11 + 3.17%) and whereas the main polyunsaturated fatty acids were Alpha-linolenic acid (39.5 ± 5.12%) and linoleic acid (27.21 ± 1.73%). Both the polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acid aid in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Thus, when one considers the ratio of the unsaturated fatty acids to the saturated fatty acids, it can be safe to conclude that pumpkin seed oil can aid in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. And also can be used as a substitute for conventional vegetable oil.
