ABSTRACT
The basic argument for the development of local government is the political need to extend the power and presence of government throughout a political system. In Nigeria, this insatiable need has compelled the government to accept the notion of power sharing and distribution in the federal structure of the country. The study looked into the autonomy of local governments in Nigeria, as well as the issues they face and how they might overcome them. The following objectives were investigated using descriptive analysis: to assess the challenges facing local government autonomy in Nigeria, to investigate the efforts of the Nigerian government in ensuring successful autonomy of local governments, and to inquire about the levels of readiness of local governments toward independence from the federal government.
