ABSTRACT
The study was designed to examine local government service delivery and agricultural sustainable development in Nigeria within the context of Egor local government area of Edo State. The objectives of the study include the following: to examine the extent local government facilitate agricultural development in Egor local council area, to ascertain if local government council enable farmers training for improve agricultural development in Egor local area, to examine if local government assist farmers in terms soft loans for agricultural development in Egor local government area, to examine the challenges faced by local government in the development of agriculture in Egor local government, to proffer solutions to the challenges faced by local government in the development of agriculture in Egor local government area. The population of the study shall include the total number of persons living in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State which according to the National Population Commission (2006) is three hundred and thousand, two hundred and eighty-five (340,287). In a bid to establish the relationship between local government and sustainable agricultural development in Egor Local Government of Edo State, a total of 200 persons will be randomly surveyed from the designated ten (10) wards in the local government area. The data collected was analyzed using simple percentage analytical method.The study discovered amongst others that lack of financial autonomy was a hindrance to the sustainable developmental plans and policies of the local government administration. The study also discovered that the administration of Egor local government strives to create an enabling environment for business growth by ensuing a peaceful physical and nurturing business atmosphere. Furthermore, policy recommendations were adopted which include amongst others that, the local government administration in Egor local government should engage deliberately in plans and programs targeted at sustainable development and also harness the natural resources available.
