ABSTRACT

This project explores the dynamics of local governance and community development in Nigeria, focusing on historical evolution, contemporary challenges, and potential pathways for improvement. Drawing from a diverse array of scholarly literature, government reports, and community studies, the research investigates the role of local government in addressing socio-economic needs, promoting good governance, and enhancing grassroots participation. Key themes include the historical development of local government structures, challenges facing service delivery, corruption and the quest for effective community engagement. Additionally, the study examines specific case studies, such as the Ogume Community in Delta State, to provide insights into the intersection of cultural values, socioeconomic activities, and local governance. Through critical analysis and synthesis of existing literature, the project aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding local governance in Nigeria and proposes recommendations for enhancing its effectiveness in fostering sustainable development and inclusive growth.
