ABSTRACT
This project examines the loanword repair strategy and this results in various degrees of linguistic, cultural and social influences which are dependent on the dominance of the language contact. The study examines the phonological outcomes of English on Yoruba using some selected loan words. In the methodology of this study, the data were drawn from Yoruba-English bilinguals who freely mix English codes with their native language, these speakers include the artisans, businessmen and women, traders, hawkers, contractors, broadcasters etc. Data were sourced form unscheduled oral dialogue with the selected members of the speech community under study. the dialogues that involved Yoruba-English bilinguals who employed English loan words in their day to day linguistic activities were done discretely so as to ensure their objective participation, who were also made to pronounce these loan words to evaluate how they are adapted into the structure of Yoruba. Findings show that phonological features like insertion (prosthesis and paragoge), deletion, syllable structure change, segment substitution and tone are observed as these English loan words are adapted to suit the phonological structure of Yoruba.
