ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the effect of diet containing graded levels of pulverized seeds of Azanza garckeana fruits on liver function parameters in male Wistar albino rat. A total of twenty four (24) male Wistar albino rats were used for this study. The rats were acclimatized for seven (7) days and grouped into four groups (group 1-4) with six rats in each group. Group 1 served as control group and group 2 through 4 were the experimental group fed with diet containing 10, 20, and 30 percent of pulverized seeds of Azanza garckeana fruit respectively. At the end of the experimental period, the rats were anesthetized with chloroform, blood sample was collected from the abdominal aorta and the rats were sacrificed. The serum total protein (TP), alkaline phosphate (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), albumin (ALB) and bilirubin levels were then evaluated using standard analytical method. The result reveals a non-significant increase (p>0.05) in alkaline phosphate (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and total protein (TP) level of rats fed with diet containing graded level of pulverized seeds of Azanza garckeana at graded level of 10, 20, 30% relative to the control. The result also revealed a significant increase (p>0.05) in albumin level of rat fed with 20% of pulverized seed of Azanza garckeana compared with control group. While that of total protein and albumin were not significantly different (P>0.05) relative to those of control. Conclusively diet containing graded levels of pulverized seeds of Azanza garckeana had no adverse effect on the liver.
