ABSTRACT

Picralima nitida is a medicinal plant widely known and used for it's numerous therapeutic benefits. This experimental study examined the potential effect of the aqueous fruit pulp extract of Picralima nitida on lipid profile in experimental rats weighing 180 to 220g weight were divided into six groups, five rats per group.Group 1 which was the control group received no extract while group 2-6 received 200mg,500mg,1000mg,2000mg and 3000mg/kg body weight respectively of the Picralima nitida aqueous fruit pulp extract orally via a gastric gavage. At the end of the experimental period, the blood samples were taken and the total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoproteins (HDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) levels were assessed. The Results showed that although there was no significant p value difference on total cholesterol and triglyceride levels;however, there was a significant increase in high density lipoproteins (HDL) levels and a significant reduction in low density lipoproteins (LDL) levels suggesting that the aqueous fruit pulp extract of Picralima nitida could be a promising natural remedy for improving blood lipid levels and may be replicated in humans.
