ABSTRACT

Market names served as essential markers of community identity in Lagos State, Nigeria. Despite their significance in reflecting linguistic diversity, cultural heritage, and economic aspirations, existing research had largely overlooked these naming conventions. This study addressed that gap by examining the linguistic landscape of market names and exploring the motivations behind naming patterns. The research was conducted in key commercial hubs across Lagos State, including Ikeja, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Agege, and Lagos Mainland. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing observational methods, semi-structured interviews, and content analysis of market signage to gather data from market traders, residents, and other stakeholders. This approach enabled the study to capture the complex interplay of language practices and cultural influences in the urban marketplace. The findings revealed that market names were shaped by a combination of linguistic influences, notably Yoruba, English, Hausa, and French. The names not only indicated the geographical identity of their locations but also reflected economic specialization, historical and cultural heritage, as well as political and social dynamics. Additionally, the study found that the lack of formal documentation and standardization of market names contributed to inconsistencies in spelling and interpretation, highlighting the need for systematic research in this area. In conclusion, the research provided significant insights into the sociolinguistic landscape of Lagos State by demonstrating how market names contributed to cultural preservation, economic interaction, and urban identity. The findings offered a foundation for future policy interventions aimed at promoting linguistic diversity and cultural heritage in urban settings.
