ABSTRACT
This research work is designed to investigate the interference of mother tougue in the speech of Isoko English bilinguals. It examines the phenomena of interference ie how it affects the Isoko speakers of English Language, thus how L1 (Isoko) interferes with L2 (English) in their speech. Emphasis is placed on the phonological, semantic and grammatical factors responsible for interference phenomenon in the production as well as grammatical constructions of the English language spoken by Isoko native speakers. The aim of study is to find out how and why interference occurs in the production and grammatical structures of Isoko English language bilinguals by employing the contrastive analysis hypothesis. However, the framework of this research is Weinreich’s (1953) ‘Contact Linguistics’ because this theoretical framework is able to account for the effects of interferences between one languages. The method of data collection is the interview method with the aid of a recorder. The major finding in this work is that interference errors manifest in individuals differently inspite of their academic height and socials status.
