ABSTRACT

The concern of this study is the linguistic analysis of the language of text message among youths in Edo state, Nigeria. As discovered in the study, the use of several text message language/word formations is predominantly found among youths. The language of text message is considered to be an act of morphology (word formation). The study via descriptive linguistic theory affirms to the fact that the language of text message is not ambiguous as many new users consider it to be. In the cause of theoretical application, the study discovered that the use of abbreviation is to engineer quick/fast conversation. Also, the findings of the study highlighted ten (10) areas in which the language of text message among Nigeria youth encompasses. They are phonetic spellings, acronyms and initialization, omission of vowels, shortening, misspelling/non-conventional spellings, accent stylization, numbers replacing letters or words, use of symbols and emotions, replacement of whole words with letters or symbols and replacement of whole words with two or more letters.
