ABSTRACT
Physiochemical analysis of 3 samples of kitchen wastewater from Ekosodin, Uniben food court and Uniben hostel, carried out in Ugbowo, Benin city, Edo state. During the analysis, Turbidity, Temperature, pH, Alkalinity, TDS, Electrical conductivity, Taste, Colour, Odour and Bacteria counts were analysed. In this study, temperature was relatively high for the three samples with the highest temperature at 30.5⁰C. The pH for these samples was 6.33, 8.23, and 8.54 as compared to the WHO standard of 6-9. DO value for the three kitchen wastewater samples was 0.53, 0.41, and 0.37 which was lower compared to the WHO standard of 4mg/L. Electrical conductivity for these samples were 0.35, 131.5, and 165.0µs/cm as compared to the WHO value of 1000µs/cm and this affected the TDS value for these samples which are 0.23, 85.47, and 107.25mg/L as compared to the WHO value of 2000mg/L. According to above result, it can be observed that kitchen wastewater is unfit for human consumption and unsafe for the environment when released. Furthermore, kitchen wastewater needs to be treated before being discharged into the environment either for irrigation purposes, domestic use or human consumption.
