ABSTRACT
Sense relation in a language refers to linguistic meaning of an expression and the use of meaning to distinguish lexical items. The aim is to ascertain the relationship that exist between lexical items in Nnewi. The objectives are to highlight the uses of the device in a context and also to enable the uses of the language detect them in context without mixing them up. The need for the study is an attempt to examine the nature and sources of senses relation in Nnewi dialect of Igbo and because it can be used to enlarge the vocabulary of a language learner. The hypothesis investigated is the assumption that there are no true synonyms in a natural language which was attested. The method used in collection of data consisted of both primary and secondary method, one to one interview with the native speaker and other information’s from books from different authors. The instrument used in collecting data was pen, writing pad and a digital recorder. The theoretical method adopted for the study is the lexical semantics. The theoretical framework focuses on the data presented. The results led to the following findings; In synonymy, to attest for true synonyms. Antonyms don’t always have their opposite counterpart in a negative form. Hyponyms can be hierarchical in order and a relationship between the superordinate and subordinate term. Meronyms are part whole relationship which can be transitive or non-transitive. Homonyms are lexical entries with separate meanings while polysemy are lexical entries with related meanings. In conclusion, justice has been done to the data presented and has shown the relatedness between lexical items in Nnewi with examples.
