ABSTRACT
This study examined the lexical semantics of Ibibio; with emphasis on lexical relations, lexical negation and lexical ambiguity. The aim of the project was to discuss the lexical relations that exist in Ibibio and describe how lexical ambiguity and lexical negation manifest in Ibibio. The project employed both primary and secondary data. The primary data collected via interviews with four (4 males and 1 female) native speakers using the aid of a sound recorder. The data was analysed using the framework of descriptive linguistics (Himmelman (1995)).
The data analysis established the following lexical relations; hyponymy, homonymy, synonymy, polysemy, antonymy. Furthermore, the study found that Ibibio employs two morphemes (kû and ì) for negation.
The project shows that Ibibio has similar lexical relations with other well studied languages such the English language and French. The study also found evidence of lexical ambiguity, but unlike what obtains in the literature where ambiguity is closely related to pun (humour), lexical ambiguity exists as a result of the presence of polysemy and homonymy in the language.
