ABSTRACT

This project examines and reviews Lexical Phonology, a theory of rules and derivations. The study relies on the Language of everyday-to-day conversation among the Yorùbá as the major source of data. The investigation throws more light on the crucial role of the lexicon in the grammar of a language. This study goes much further to examine some sound modifications such as deletion (vowel and consonant), Assimilation etc. in relation to the domain of morphological processes that they occur in. Incorporating insights from the theory of Lexical Phonology, this project presents a claim that in the derivation of a Yorùbá lexicon, there is a convergence of phonological rules and morphological rules in a cyclic fashion. This study, therefore, shows what is known as the characteristics of lexical and postlexical components in Yorùbá.
