ABSTRACT
The study examined lexical erosion in Edo Language.According to this study, the Bini lexicon is currently being eroded. The patterns of reduced lexical resources found among contemporary speakers of the Bini language support this. While some words were dropped due to synonym rivalry, others were replaced by less precise generic terms. Many others were replaced with longer strings or descriptive phrases.The lexical erosion observed in this study is thought to be the result of incomplete language transmission from older to younger generations. This failure of current speakers to acquire the fuller vocabularies that were in use among their parents and grandparents may reflect increasingly negative attitudes toward the Bini language in comparison to English, Nigeria's official language.
