ABSTRACT
This study examines the lexical borrowing in Urhobo language. The work is premised on the morphology of the language. The study adopted quantitative method of research design.
The objective of the study is to find out the processes inventing new lexical items through borrowing, promoting further research works and hence provide relevant information to act as a reference material to other researchers.
The data for the study was collected through personal interview and interactions with native speakers of the language and also from personal intuition as a native speaker. The study also adopted secondary method of data collection whereby textbooks, articles, journals and electronic media were made use of.
Findings show that there are various ways by which new lexical items could be invented in Urhobo language through borrowing.
The focus of this study is to examine and close the gap on the area of lexical borrowing in Urhobo language that had not been fully explored by researchers.
The study concludes that Urhobo language has only two types of borrowing pattern out of four.
The study recommends that culture and borrowing should be modified.
