ABSTRACT
Toxins introduced into the environment as a consequence of human and natural activities are one of the most significant issues affecting today's societies. As a consequence of industrial and economic advancement and the creation of a variety of compounds and chemicals, followed by rising consumption, man develops certain undesirable pollutants, many of which cause substantial challenges and worries for the environment and for man himself. This study was conducted to determine the level of two pharmaceuticals(Ibuprofen and Diclofenac) and the distribution of heavy metals in sediment of Ogba river, Edo state, Nigeria. Sediment samples were collected from 3 stations across Ogba river using a stainless steel cup. Diclofenac was found at a range of 2.39µg/ml to 2.46µg/ml while a range of 0.2µg/ml to 0.7µg/ml was detected for Ibuprofen. Station 1 had the highest level of occurrence for Diclofenac while station 3 had the highest occurrence for Ibuprofen. These results have shown quantifiable levels of ibuprofen and diclofenac in Ogba river, which poses a serious threat to aquatic life as well as humans. Sewage plants should adopt more efficient sediment treatment processes and technologies to reduce drug release into Nigeria's aquatic environment.
