ABSTRACT
Nigeria’s leadership crisis is characterized by corruption, nepotism, lack of accountability, and inefficiency, which are deeply rooted in the patriarchal structures and gendered norms prevalent in the society. This research project explores the intricate crises of leadership in Nigeria through a feminist lens. The work examines the socio-political and cultural dimensions that have historically marginalized women in leadership roles in Nigeria. The focus is to understand the extent and implications of gender inequality in Nigeria’s leadership and to probe the structural and systemic impediments that hinder women’s participation not only in politics but in governance. The study delves into the historical traditions, colonial legacies, and post-colonial developments that have shaped the leadership landscape in Nigeria, emphasizing the gendered aspects of these transformations and their impacts on women’s leadership roles. Through a comprehensive analysis of literature and feminist theories, this project investigates the gender disparities in Nigerian politics, the negative stereotypes surrounding women’s political participation, and the cultural and societal constraints faced by women aspiring to leadership positions. Additionally, this study explores the contributions of women who have overcome these barriers, highlighting their roles in political struggles, activism, and nation-building. The feminist approach in this research provides insights into the potential of women’s leadership in addressing and mitigating the leadership crisis in Nigeria. The work discovers the intersectionality of gender, power, and leadership in Nigeria. Hence it proposes strategies for empowering women and fostering a more inclusive and equitable political environment. Recommendations are offered for policy reforms, awareness campaigns, and gender-sensitive practices aimed at dismantling patriarchal norms and enhancing women’s representation and participation in leadership and advocating for transformative leadership that embraces diversity, equality, and social justice.
