LEADERSHIP AND GOOD GOVERNANCE IN AFRICA

ABSTRACT

This study examines leadership and good governance in Africa: its challenges and possible solutions: a study of the Nigerian nation during the period of 1960 to 2010. This study’s research methodology is based on the use of secondary sources. The study is divided into 5 chapters, chapter one examines the background of leadership and good governance in some western countries, in Africa and Nigeria, chapter two highlighted the concepts of leadership and good governance. Chapter three examined a brief history of leadership and good governance in Africa, in the Nigerian state and the state of leadership and good governance in Nigeria, while chapter four investigated the causes, effects of leadership failure in Nigeria and its consequences on national development, finally chapter five concluded the study and offered recommendations. This study established that corruption, economic instability, electoral malpractices, internal colonialists and so on are the causes of leadership failure in Nigeria, and its consequences has brought about social unrest, poverty, political and economic instability and lack of basic infrastructure. The study also established that addressing the root causes of bad leadership and governance in Nigeria requires a multifaceted approach that combines institutional reforms, accountability and inclusive governance practices.
