ABSTRACT
The environment and its compartments have been severely polluted by heavy metals.This has compromised the ability of the environment to foster life and render itsintrinsic values. Hence this study was carried out to examine the effect of some heavy metal (Arsenic and Lead) in soil from cattle paddock in Benin city. The study was carried out in Benin city. Soil samples were representatively collected from two (2) different points within the cattle paddock. The soil samples (SS) collected were labeled SS1 and SS2. The soil samples were collected at three (3) different depths, which were 0-15cm, 15 – 30cm and 30–60 cm with the use of a soil auger. The result of the study it was observed that cattle paddock is associated with increasing levels of heavy metal pollution. The study revealed that soil depth of 0- 15cm recorded higher concentrations of the heavy metals both in the control site and at “Treatment” while soil depth of 30 – 60cm shows the lowest level of heavy metal concentration. Ecological problem of the cattle rearing operation as regards to heavy metals in the area is the pollution/contamination of soil within the paddock site. Associated impact of the pollution of soil by heavy metals could manifest in poor crop yield, as well as food poisoning due to metal accumulation in cultivated crops, most especially vegetables hence it is recommended that monitoring of the current environmental qualityof pasture soils in terms of heavy metal accumulation shouldbe done continuously to make sure that the levels remainlow.
