ABSTRACT

One of the basic engine of language communication evaluation is pragmatics which allows for the flourishing of information from one entity to another. This study highlights the place of pragmatics as a campaign strategy in creating Covid-19 awareness among the members of the society as obtainable in Benin metropolis which is the setting for the present study. The study also evaluates the coinages of several new concepts into the Nigerian English because of the covid pandemic. Campaign samples of eighty (80) handbills and posters were collected from three medical centres/hospital within the Benin metropolis and were analysed employing the tools of pragmatics. The study was able to answer the questions of the newly coined terminologies used in Nigerian language during the covid-19pandemic Comparing the usage of this term indifferent contexts and how these terms have affected the daily lives of the people. The study concludes from the analysis that most of these terms are already existing words that have been used in several context that differs from its usage during the covid-19pandemic.
