Abstract
This research effort is a descriptive study as it describes the language used in Edo traditional marriage ceremony. Edo is a language which is located at the Western part of Nigeria and spoken in seven Local Government Areas of Edo State, Nigeria which are: Egor, Oredo, Ovia-North-East, Ovia-South-West, Uhunmwode, Orhionmwon and Ikpoba-Okha. The aim of this study however is to show that terms and expressions employed by the Edo people during marriage ceremonies are contextual as these are not similar to those used and heard by the people on daily basis. Data for this study were collected with the aid of field notes and audio-recordings through participant observations and described accordingly using a descriptive approach which analyzes data based on description. Our major finding in this study however reveals that most lexical items used in Edo marriage ceremonies derive their meanings based on context.
