ABSTRACTLanguage is learned, shared and it is an arbitrary system of vocalsymbols through which human beings in the same speech communities or sub culture interact and hence communicat e in terms of their common experience and expectations. Language use refers to how the people in a given speech community use language in their day to day act ivities which could also be likened to their jargons, register, or dialect etc. This researchwork set out to look into or study the way language is used in track and field.The theoretical frame work employed in doing or carrying out this study is Ethnography of communication by Dell Hymes. This work is therefore study language use in track and field. This research work found out that ethnography of communication is a model that best explains how language is used in the track and field speech community. This research work in its findings discovered that language used in track and field are both verbal andnon-verbal and that the various conventional signs in the various sub events means the same thing.
