Abstract

This research work investigates the language use in the Military. It examines the various special registers, code words, the use of abbreviations, slangs, and also some morphological processes were also examined e.g. compounding, blending, clipping, borrowing all these enriches the military language. It also examines the special terms used in the military setting and it explains their technical meanings which are different from conventional meaning. Primary and secondary source were utilized for the data collection. The primary source of data was through oral interview of some military officers in the S and T Barracks, Ugbowo, Benin City. Secondary source of data was textbooks, internet and some online post. The systemic functional linguistic theory of 1985 was adopted to frame this research work. The findings of this research work made obvious that the characteristics of military language are comparatively distinct from all other varieties. The writer of this work ends the work on the note that language use in the military is peculiar and relevant to those in the military profession.
