ABSTRACT

Language is part of the nature of human beings; it is what defines us. Language is part of our daily lives and our nightly dreams. Language allows us to communicate, express our ideas, feelings, thoughts, behaviors, etc. We think through language. Language is a complex system of communication that humans use to convey thoughts, ideas, emotions, and information. It typically consists of a set of symbols, such as spoken words or written characters, that carry meaning. Language enables people to express themselves, share knowledge, and communicate with one another. Language is a fundamental aspect of human culture and plays a crucial role in how we interact, learn, and understand the world around us. Language Use in Spousal Battery in Yorubaland" investigates the intricate relationship between language use and the occurrence of spousal battery within the Yoruba cultural context. Using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theoretical framework, "Language Use in Spousal Batteries in Yorubaland" revealed several findings. It identified types of spousal battery in Yorubaland: physical, psychological, and economic abuse. These findings draw attention to the multifaceted nature of abuse within this cultural context. The research shed light on the effects of spousal battery on victims, encompassing physical injuries, emotional trauma, and economic disempowerment. The study identified various factors responsible for spousal battery in Yorubaland, including deeply ingrained patriarchal norms, economic disparities, and cultural beliefs that normalize violence within relationships. Regarding language use, the research found that language played a pivotal role in perpetuating and concealing spousal battery. Verbal abuse, linguistic manipulation, and the use of derogatory language were common tools of control and intimidation. Based on these findings, several recommendations are proposed: raise awareness, cultural sensitivity, linguistic awareness, support services, and research continuation. By implementing these recommendations, Yorubaland can take significant steps toward addressing spousal battery, protecting victims, and fostering healthier, violence-free relationships while preserving its cultural heritage.
