ABSTRACT

This study is focus on the language use in religious institution with particular reference to the Roman Catholic and Pentecostal Denomination Chapter one embodies the introduction of the study, the methodology of the work, the purpose of study, and the significance of study and justification of study, Chapter two, is a brief review of the related literature, chapter three, is the theoretical framework, based on the “Doctrine of Illocution. Within “Performatives” an aspect of J.L Austin (1962) Speech Act Theory. Chapter Four is analysis and discussions. This work is based on the messages and sermons of men of God during the services and explains the kinds of acts that language is used to perform in these institutions. The final chapter, that is chapter five, includes findings and a brief conclusion of the work and recommendation.
