ABSTRACT

The language used by Shallipoppi are indeed unique and interesting. It makes the listener want to pay rapt attention to what he is singing. The song takes its socio-cultural expressions from the Nigerian Pidgin English, and the Edo language. It can also be said that the songs safeguarded the documentation of some historical and cultural items in the Edo language and society. The songs represent a case for the presence of a variety of Ẹdo language and Pidgin used in the song which can only be understood by a careful consideration of the wordings of the song and the choice of language by the artist; Shallipoppi.
