Abstract
Festivals evolve through culture; and it encompasses the way and moral codes of a people. Festivals were, and still adhere to, the re-enactments (rituals) of the myths and legends of any community from which traditional festival theatres developed. The purpose of this study is to identify the language(s) used in the National Igue Festival Celebration in Edo State and its imperativeness to the Edo (Bini) people in general. Consequently, the study shall examine Igue as a viable and potent tool for sustaining cultural heritage and development. In order to achieve this project (research) and its rationale as cited in the study’s background, the research work is broken down into five chapters. The first chapter entails the introduction, with fore grounds bothering on: importance and relevance of traditional festivals, as well as fundamental issues of the study’s purpose – where some basic assumptions about Igue (plus African festivals generally) and its practice would be clarified. Also, the study’s significance, scope, methodology, limitations, conceptual framework and definition of some basic terms is not left out. Chapter two is the literature review, which scans through Bini culture and tradition; origin of Bini Festivals and their significance. Chapter three discusses the Igue as a National Festival Celebration in Edo and the language used in the festival. Analysis of the languages used in Igue would be examined in the chapter four, vis-à-vis its elements. Chapter five shall entail the summary of the entire study, observation and recommendations.
