ABSTRACT
This study is a descriptive analysis of the language use in child birth and naming ceremony of the Urhobo language. It investigates the manifestation of child birthing process and naming. It is aimed at describing how child birth and naming takes place and how names are given according to circumstances, condition or construction present in the language.
The data for this work gathered from competent native speakers of the language and were analyzed accurately and critically. The framework for this study Gerhard Friedrich Miller’s concept of ethnography about the cultural practices and belief of a speech community, developed as a separate discipline in 1733 – 43. This work language and also the classification of naming, socio cultural construction of names and the effect of the urboho culture on naming/names in the dialect or language.
The study found that there are three types of construction of names realizable in the language which are; the how context rule, the positive sanction rule and the generality of rule. Again the study also found that there is an effect of the language’s culture on the naming practices in Urhobo including the categorization of names. The study concludes that languages use in child birth and naming ceremony it very much present and in use in Urhobo language.
