ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate the situation of language in Ore community. This is achieved by examining the nature of multilingualism and language attitude among speakers of various languages in the community. Data was collected by the use of a twenty point questionnaire and analysed through the use of simple statistics. It was discovered that most of the younger respondents are drifting from their mother tongue to Yoruba language while the parents generally prefer that their children should acquire English language. This suggests the negative attitude towards indigenous languages such as Igbo and Hausa etc. There is language conflict in Ore community, Yoruba and Pidgin are the dominating language even though English is the language used mostly in school. This concludes that the attitude of non Yoruba inhabitants of the community towards their mother tongue is negative.
