ABSTRACT
This work examines the language of SMS among Uniben students. The data that were used in this research were gotten directly from the Uniben students. The theoretical framework adopted in this work is Dixon Basic Linguistic Theory of (1997). Language is an inevitable phenomenon in human environment; language is used in every sphere of human endeavours due to this fact, diverse forms of language keep evolving every day. Language is always used in different contexts, that is to say different situations determine the forms of language, this work focuses on the language of SMS among the students of Uniben which occurred as result of the advent of mobile devices. In SMS language, its uniqueness is in its word formation and not sentence formation, it is a convenient means of communicating among students and youths of the University of Benin. At the sentence level SMS language is the same with the standard English language as it maintains the same syntactic structure, it is an SVO and head 11 last language, when it comes to sentence formation, SMS language takes all the features and properties of the Standard English.
