ABSTRACT

This study seeks to explore the language situation of the Urhobo language, to determine its vitality and to reveal how Government and individual effort can help in promoting the language. The data for this work was collected using both primary and secondary sources. The theoretical framework adopted for this study was the Ethnolinguistic vitality theory- which is geared towards the investigation of the overall strength or vitality of the language. From the analysis, we discover that the Urhobo language is dying gradually and slowly. I recommend that the language should be used in the home, taught in schools as a subject, and used in social gatherings to enhance the vitality of the language.
