ABSTRACT

The goal of this work is to investigate the sociolinguistic situation in Orogho Community. It investigates the phenomena of language contact and language conflict as they manifest amongst their languages. The study also investigates the nature of multilingualism among speakers in Orogho Community, to determine the language attitude of speakers towards their mother tongue, and to find out if there is really a language conflict situation in Orogho. The methodology used for this work is a descriptive one. Data was collected for this study, with the use of questionnaires. Data analysis was done with the use of simple statistics and was presented in a tabular form with the use of simple percentage to enhance easy understanding .The study finds amongst others that OroghoCommunity is made up of multilinguals, the language attitudes of the youth in Orogho is negative towards their mother tongue, the dominating languages in Orogho are Ẹdo and Pidgin, majority of the people in Orogho enjoy speaking Ẹdo language.
